SA loves cheese

More than 32 000 cheese-loving visitors enjoyed the unparalleled variety of cheeses and other deli products at the 13th SA Cheese Festival presented at Sandringham over the weekend of 26 – 29 April 2014. Gourmet celebs and well-known chefs including Nataniël, and winners and runners-up of the MasterChef SA and kykNET Kokkedoor programmes entertained and educated thousands of foodies in the various food theatres. Young and old soaked up the autumn sunshine while relaxing with their best buys and live music in the background.

Johan Ehlers, CEO of Agri-Expo says: The fact that the South African public annually embraces the SA Cheese Festival to such an extent bears testimony to the successful presentation thereof. The challenge for any organiser presenting an event of this magnitude is to ensure that returning visitors experience something new each time, and that logistics continue to improve to grant visitors a superb, safe and stress-free experience. Feedback from the dairy industry is that the festival indeed draws the limelight to cheese for the month of April and that especially small boutique cheeseries gain invaluable exposure during the four days.”

The air-cooled Checkers Cheese Emporium burst at the seams with cheeses from far and wide in celebration of this noble dairy product. Visitors tasted to their heart’s content – went back, tasted some more and then stocked up on their favourites.

After a focused session of tasting and browsing visitors choose a table in the shade, put their feet up with some purchases from the food lane and listened to some live music from the Ladismith Music Gazebo before returning for more.

Celebrity foodies simply love the Cheese Festival and its enthusiastic visitors, and this year the Afrox Cooking Pot was packed to capacity every day with fun yet informative (and totally free) sessions by an impressive line-up of foodies and cheese, beer and wine masters.
