SA CHEESE FESTIVAL IS COOKING

Visitors to the 17th South African Cheese Festival will not only taste cheese and see master chefs in action but can also create cheese masterpieces themselves. A ticket to this award-winning festival, over the Freedom Day long weekend (Friday 27 to Sunday 29 April), promises a taste experience of local and international cheeses, artisan and gourmet products as well as selected wines.

Interactive food theatres

Celebrity chefs galore will cook up a storm in the three food theatres at the SA Cheese Festival. Jenny Morris (The Giggling Gourmet), Kamini Pather (MasterChef SA winner), The Food Alchemist Pete Goffe-Wood (Master Chef Judge) and Carmen Niehaus will entertain guests in the kykNET Cooking Pot. In the Cape Made Kitchen chef Selwyn October of the Institute of Culinary Arts (ICA) will demonstrate specially developed water-wise recipes – creatively pairing cheese with niche products such as pomegranates, persimmons and granadillas. These recipes, inspired by ex-ICA students Herman Lensing, Zola Nene and Johnny Hamman, are compiled in a recipe book available for free at the festival thanks to a partnership between the Milk Producers Organisation (MPO), Hortgro, WCDA, ICA en Agri-Expo.

#YourWheyWithCheese Cook-off

Amateur chefs were invited to enter their water-wise recipes with Président cheese for the #YourWheyWithCheese Cook-off in partnership with Heart FM. Four finalists will cook off in the kykNET Cooking Pot at the SA Cheese Festival, two on Friday 27 April, two on Saturday 28 April, with the final Cook-off on Sunday 29 April with judges Jenny Morris, Kamini Pather and Sihle Ngobese. The four finalists are Elsibe McGuffog from Wellington, Liesl Armstrong from Durbanville, Matt van den Berg from Stellenbosch and Daniella Zoghby from Johannesburg.

A unique platform for small cheese makers

Be on the lookout for exhibitions of small cheese makers – every year the SA Cheese Festival affords a number of small cheese makers the opportunity to introduce their hand-crafted cheeses to more than 30 000 visitors, thanks to the support of the WCDA and Absa as partners.

Discover pairing cheese with niche products

The SA Cheese Festival also focus on pairing cheese with niche products for exceptional tasting experiences. The Cape Made: Taste the Alternatives exhibition is where 40 exhibitors can share their niche products such as berries, figs and honeybush tea directly with the public, thanks to a partnerships between the WCDA and Agri-Expo. Foodies can taste these products as well as learn more how water wise hydroponic herbs are, how versatile pomegranates are, and how vegetables are farmed on the Cape Flats.

Cheese carving and live music

There will be great prizes and of course some delicious cheese to be won in the Ladismith Cheese-carving competition, that takes place daily at Blossom’s Gazebo.  At the Stellenbosch Vineyards Music Gazebo, Cheese Festival goers will be treated to the sounds of popular artists Nic Stevens (Friday), Die Wildberries and Kurt Darren (Saturday), as well as old favourites by Absolutely Fabulous, Sincere Swing, Under Cover and Bev Scott Brown and SHIM SHAM.

Connoisseur’s Experience

Cheese aficionados, who crave a more intimate tryst with cheese and foodies, will do well to book for the exclusive Connoisseurs’ Experience. This tailormade package (at R850 per person, 18 years and older only) will entitle you to delights that only the Connoisseurs (limited to 100 persons per day) can experience, including reserved seating, VIP parking and entrance, an exclusive Jenny Morris show, a cheese-making demonstration by Leon the Milkman, a Président-curated cheese platter, a bottle of Linton Park Wine and more.

Interaktiewe kosteaters
